I've had better luck with ethtool for most devices and vortex-diag for
3com devices. Mii-tool just tells me everything is 10baseT, when it's
not... It just depends on which device you have.

Ooooh, good suggestion....
you can find out what speed your nic is by typing:
mii-tool
This is part of the net-tools package in
redhat/fedora.
