I don't know about this...you learn best when thinking
there is no such thing as failure, only learning.

If you were one of the chosen ones to see me present
on killer Linux Apps in July 2003, this was a major
theme that I've hammered on.  

Sometimes you have to screw it up to learn.  

But there are others, who continue to screw up and
never learn from it.

Do you have the luxury of having extra hardware to run
both RH/Gentoo machines in parallel in a type of
test/development environment? 

I think that would be the best bet to learn and see
what happens.
