Craig,
If you are not using mod_perl on apache it is safe to do.  Just edit
httpd.conf and comment out the lines that detect perl and enable it.  I
had to the same for an installation yesterday early am.

Disabling mod_perl will not affect php.  It will only bite you if you have
perl/apache code somewhere else.  If you are only using apache/php then
you are good to go.
