Is your kernel configured to allow console on serial port? Many distros
modularize the serial port. Look in "Character devices" and make sure the
"Standard/generic (8250/16550 and compatible UARTs) serial support" is not
a module and that you have then also checked "Support for console on
serial port" as a suboption. These are required to be compiled in if you
want the kernel to be able to talk to the serial port during init.
