My first TDK 24X burner did this. It was VERY Picky with media, but when it
burned.... they were ALWAYS Good readable burns. But it eventually got too
picky and i got it replaced. So, i get back the new rev of the drive.... it
never failed power calibration (Cuz they took that feature out).... but guess
what! 90% of my burns were TERRIBLE. It would burn but audio CDs burned any
faster than 4x crackled all the way through.

Now i have a 48x plextor. It has new technology that is CONSTANTLY adjusting
the power of the laser. PERFECT BURNS all the time. However, I cant get it
to go anywhere close to 48x. I put the blame here on the inability to read
sustained at extremely high speeds from my drive. Linux Hard drive
controller drivers arent anywhere close to win2k or winxp HD controller
speeds.

The short.... Try various medias dont use cheepies.... try different (lower)
speeds. If all fail, the drive is probably toast.
Sorry
Brandon
