I assisted one of our customers/sister-companies setting up their
Internet radio station a number of years ago. We had similar problems
and the audio engineer said that the volume problem (among other things)
was due to the fact that we were using "consumer" grade audio cards.
There are high end audiophile audio cards that use "balanced" inputs.
Standard SoundBlaster-type audiocards use "un-balanced" inputs. From
what I understand about the differences, it is that the un-balanced type
of audio cards use a single ground, where the high end cards have a
separate ground for each channel and the difference between ground and
the audio signal can be "balanced" correctly...
If you are interested, the recommended audio card at that time was the
CardDeluxe by DigitalAudio.com (http://www.digitalaudio.com/). Their
current web site shows the latest card at $399...a bit more than a $50
SoundBlaster... :)
Just a note from the trenches. Good luck!
