Do you have the usbfs mounted? cat /proc/bus/usb/devices

Note that if you have multiple devices on different USB ports then often
as not they are placed on different virtual scsi busses.

fe: I have my built in CDRW assigned under ide-scsi and it shows up on
scsibus 0. Then my DVDRW on USB shows up on scsibus 1. And the USBHD on a
different usb port shows up as sda on scsibus 2. cdrecord scan has known
limitations dealing with this but if you check the usb devices then you
can issue the direct scan command: cdrecord dev=1,0,0 -inq
