[olug] CUPS woes

I hate printers -- I really, really do. Ever since my C64 days they have
been a thorn in my side.

I recently bought a HP PSC 1210 printer/scanner combo. I studied the
entry at linuxprinting.org before the purchase, and decided that it could
be done:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-PSC_1210

I grabbed the CVS version of hpoj so the scanner works. And it works
like a champ (see http://users.binary.net/thehaas/gallery/ultrasounds ;)
But I can't get the printing work go.

I have Cups 1.1.18, foomatic 2.0.2, and ESP Ghostscript 7.05.6 along with
the CVS version of hpoj.. I installed the 1210 PPD file from
LinuxPrinting.org (see link above). CUPS recognizes it, and says that
it's printing, but it never does come out of the printer.

My cups error log has this:

   D [15/May/2003:10:26:07 -0500] [Job 28] foomatic-gswrapper: gs '-dBATCH'
   '-dPARANOIDSAFER' '-dQUIET' '-dNOPAUSE' '-sDEVICE=ijs'
   '-sIjsServer=hpijs' '-sDeviceManufacturer=HEWLETT-PACKARD'
   '-sDeviceModel=deskjet 3320' '-dDEVICEWIDTHPOINTS=612'
   '-dDEVICEHEIGHTPOINTS=792' '-r300'
   '-sIjsParams=Quality:Quality=0,Quality:ColorMode=2,Quality:MediaType=0,Quality:PenSet=1'
   '-dIjsUseOutputFD' '-sOutputFile=| cat >&3' '/dev/fd/0' 3>&1 1>&2
   D [15/May/2003:10:26:09 -0500] [Job 28] Flushing FIFO.
   D [15/May/2003:10:26:09 -0500] [Job 28]
   D [15/May/2003:10:26:09 -0500] [Job 28] Closing renderer
D [15/May/2003:10:26:10 -0500] [Job 28] cat: write error: Broken pipe
   E [15/May/2003:10:26:10 -0500] PID 13430 stopped with status 1!

I noted that my /usr/bin/foomatic-gswrapper was older than the one at
LinuxPrinting.org, so I grabbed that one, but have the same error.

My only other option is to install the non-CVS version of hpoj, which may
or may not work, and in which I will lose scanning for sure. I'm
wondering if any of the bigger brains here can elighten a poor printing
non-guru.

I am your humble student
