Think "Embedded Linux".

Coyote Linux (based on the Linux Router Project) does
this with a floppy: it boots from the floppy, then
uncompresses the kernel and other necessary system
elements into a RAM drive (RAM set aside for holding a
file system).

What I was gettintg at was burining the kernel,
utilities and files ystem, etc., on a bootprom, not
just the bootp/.dhcp/tftp. The process I envisioned
was similar to Coyote, but from a boot prom not a
floppy.
