The AutoOS by M$ is not unrivaled though, QNX Neutrino is making quite a bit
of headway. It runs the flagship A8 by Audi, and is moving into the BMW
market.

Some info can be found on the QNX website
http://www.qnx.com/markets/mk_telematics.html googling for "audi qnx" and
derivatives may gleem more specific info for those interested.

The real interesting thing to think about when considering today's cars is
the notion of a predictable failure state. New higher end cars are
completely fly-by-wire, there is no actual physical connection of
components, pedals, steering wheel etc are simply attached to servos that
then relay information to the engine, steering system etc. In the event of
a crash, what happens to all the systems? If the failure state is "lock the
wheels straight and quickly slow to a stop" then what happens on hairpin
mountain turns? Railroad tracks? Interesting fault tolerance issues to say
the least.

Does this scare anyone else? To find out that my new Hyundai has a M$ OS in
it makes me REALLY uncomfortable!

I hope I don't have to reboot my car anytime soon.....
