[olug] Husker Football Webcast

I was very disappointed in the webcast of the football game on
saturday. 2 things contributed to this and I don't know if
foxsports.com had anything to do with it.
First off:
The cable modem traffic was so congested that I could barely even get
enough packets to query the dns for an IP. When I did get one, I'm
pretty sure that TimeWarners connection here in Lincoln was saturated,
either that or foxsports.com was saturated. Either way I didn't get to
see the game.
Second:
Initially the cable modem traffic blasted my Linksys router with so
much traffic that it kept reseting the router. I tried this on another
router/switch/access point from Linksys and had the same results. With
a direct connection to the cable modem from the laptop, I could get out
and then I had the problem with the DNS. The shared nature of the
cable modem sucks. I am curious to know if the overload of packets
messed up the router or if a bunch of bad packets caused the problem.
This makes me wish I would still have had my Pentium 100 router setup
instead of the Linksys to see if that could have survived the traffic.
Anybody that is interested in researching this phenomenon further
should contact me. Next weeks game is also being webcast. I would
love to set up a Linux router with some packet sniffing stuff to see
what is going on but I recently lost my job and have to finish a bunch
of projects around the house in case I have to move and sell the place.
I also have an 8 month old that keeps me busy. :)
Later
Eric
