[olug] Video editing software? Photo editing software?

Has anyone done any amateur video editing with Linux?  I have some .avi 
video's taken with a digital camera that I'd like to chop up and maybe 
remove the sound.  I downloaded one called MainActor last night but it 
complained about libc++ or something on my RH8 workstation.

Also any recommendations on photo editing software?  I *hate* gimp.  I find 
it so hard to use.  I used to use Photoshop 4 all the time when I ran 
windows, and I love that.  I tried to get it running under wine but its not 
stable.

I downloaded the Corel editing software, but it just uncompressed a ton of 
RPM's.  There wasn't even a readme file or anything.  I tried running 'rpm 
-ivh *' on them but of course that gave me errors about conflicting files.
