[olug] Error with Graphical Login Screen

Running Rhat 7.1 with 2.4.2 kernel and I ran Apt-Get
for the 1st time on Friday.  I installed all packages
that I downloaded, and rebooted, but when it came back
up to the graphical login screen, my gnome/redhat
screen was replaced with a gnome developer screen that
had all of the text replaced with little blocks that I
think represent spaces.  When I input from the
keyboard, all I get are these little blocks.  

I've changed my runcontrol in /etc/inittab to 3 so I
don't have to see it, and work around it.  But, I
don't have much knowledge about X, and would like to
know if anyone else of the list has had this problem
and what happened, and how can I fix it.
