Blame Microsoft for this. The Dimensions HAVE to ship with XP due to
OEM license stuff. Dell can't even ship the Dimensions without an OS
because of MS. The other Dell 'lines' have different contracts and part
of the reason that the other models cost more is because MS charges more
for the non-exclusive OEM license for these lines.

I don't think anyone would judge somebody because of where they work
having Windows. It's just a fact of life (at least for now :) ).

Three months ago I bought an Athlon 1800+xp/DVD/ASUS MB/512 Megs Cosair
CAS 2.0 memory and some slick IDE cables from GOOGLEGEAR.com (~$600, the
memory was WAY expensive for Cosair). A friend of mine just bought a
similar upgrade from googlegear but with a CD-ROM burner and cheaper
memory for under $500. We both bought cases&PS/HD/keyboards/mice from
DIT.
Both of us have been happy with googlegear.com so far.
My research group just bought a dual PIII 1Ghz server from Tigerdirect.
Bare bones was $699. If you don't need steller performance, you may get
some pretty good all-in-one MBs from Tigerdirect. I haven't had any
trouble with them either.
Cheers.
