I don't think I've thrown my hat into this . . . .
Currently, I'm running Gentoo and I love it. It's sorta a combo of
Slackware and Debian. It has "ebuild" packages, which give the URL where
to download the sources and patches, and it downloads them, and compiles
from source. The intital install is a bit of work (not hard -- the
documentation steps you through it. But you have to manually do fdisk,
etc). And one or two commands updates your entire system.
I like it because I have complete control on my system, new versions are
immediately available, I don't have rpm-hell problems, and it only
installes packages I want.
You must have fast internet (cable modem, T1, etc), and the intital
install takes some doing, but you learn *a lot* about Linux (and your
system), and the resulting system is fast, fast, fast . . .
