I do following when mbr overwritten.
Boot slackware cdrom
as root mount root partition ex
mount /mnt /dev/hda3
mount boot partion
mount /mnt/boot /dev/hda4
chroot /mnt
. /etc/profile
lilo
exit
exit
exit
This fixes problem. Reinstalls lilo with values found in /etc/lilo.conf. For this to work need to make sure the mounted filesystems include /sbin/lilo /etc/ /boot ( or wherever kernel images are ). There are other cds that give root shell / chroot command. Works wonderfully.
