There was (and may still be) a script in init.d dir that sets up
the system to use xdm on booting, and it overwrites the inittab
if it has to.  If you are removing something that runs in an 
automated manner you've got to clean up the scripts.  
man update-rc.d, ...it's likely that failure to use this program
to purge xdm from your system caused xdm to be reset to run.
