I woldn't use anything other than ncftpd.
It's not free though. For 3 simultaneous users, there's no fee. It's unlimited for educational domains.
$100 will get you 50 simultaneous users, lifetime support and upgrades. ($199 for unlimited users)
It's definatly worth it if you're serious about what you are doing. It's VERY fast and secure.
It's also the only one I found that can handle a *really* high load of small files.
The author is located in Omaha and very helpful.
