Well, as long as it's not wu-ftpd you're basically golden :)
I've had good experience with ProFTPd. There are quite a few others
listed on freshmeat: http://freshmeat.net/browse/679/
"Pure FTP Server" and "Troll-FTPd" are frequently mentioned as good
alternatives.
