Dave's tip doesn't require you to be running Debian.  If you download
the source as a gzipped tar file, then you can unarchive the source no
matter what distribution you're running and read files such as README,
INSTALL, and whatever other docs are in the package.  Usually you can
find a pointer to an Internet site, a mailing list, a person to contact,
or other information that might help you locate the package in another
form, if needed, and should at least help you understand and resolve
your problem.

Also, package names don't vary too much between distributions.  So
knowing the Debian package name can help you find the corresponding
package for your favorite distribution.  If you use your web browser to
look for packages on sites such as mirrors of Red Hat Contrib, don't
forget that you can use the "Find in Page" or "Find" facility under the
Edit menu to search for strings that identify the package in the long
lists of links to packages.  For the example, you might use your web
browser to go to the appropriate FTP site and search for the string
"pixbuf" or, if that doesn't work, the string "gdk" in the case that
we're currently discussing.
