[OLUG] printer woes

i've just compiled and installed kernel v2.2.14 in hope that i would be
able to share my one parallel port between my zip drive and printer.  i
ended up killing my printer.  even before i 'insmod ppa', i can't print.

i have read the docs i can find for printing... printing how-to,
parport.txt, etc.

when i attempt to print, the job queues up but i get this in my log:

Mar 14 18:20:35 lunchbox kernel: lp0 off-line

the modules lp, parport, and parport_pc are all loaded. if i try to cat a
file to /dev/lp0, i don't get my cursor back in the term until i hit
^c.  and of course, it doesn't print.

i imagine that you will need more info than i have provided, but i am not
sure of what to look for yet.
