Of course in my long-winded rambling, I forgot to remember that you had
successfully connected to olug.bstc.net using the IP numbers with netscape, didn't
you? If you did, then there is nothing wrong with your default route...probably
still a DNS issue. You may need to be a little more patient with ping...it might
take a few seconds to show some life.
As for the netscape being locked or whatever problem, just get rid of the lock
file:
cd ~
rm .netscape/lock
