I'm with Dan. I'd check smart errors before anything else. I had an
encrypted drive go flaky and the system would take hours to boot. With no
IO errors present in the normal places.

Look for old age.

It is in the repo. smartmontools for fedora/centos. smartctl -a /dev/sda#
