It doesn't need to be an either/or case.  I still have a home server
(in fact, I replaced/upgraded it shortly after I migrated Internet
services to the VPS), and make very heavy use of it.  It just doesn't
handle my Internet-facing web, e-mail, and DNS.

Among the functions it performs:

 * VM Host
 * Dev Server
 * VPN Server (for Wifi Network)
 * VPN Gateway to Internet Server
 * File server (NFS and Samba)
 * PostgreSQL Server
 * DHCP Server (for LAN and Wifi)
 * Centralized Log Host (Syslog-NG)
 * Monitoring Server (Munin, Zabbix, etc)
 * Squid Caching Proxy for home network
 * etc.
