[olug] Bandwidth: Cox, Sprint, Verizon

Yesterday my primary Internet died. I tried to fall back on Sprint 3G (HTC Evo hotspot) and I can't stand it any more. (Sprint 4G is a joke that isn't funny any more.)

So I went out and bought a Verizon MiFi 4G hotspot card. Love it!

Below, some speed tests. My results:

- Cox cable modem (land line) is 5X faster than Verizon 4G (mobile).
- Verizon 4G (mobile) is 15X faster than Sprint 3G.

Keystroke wise: My new MiFi feels like land line. I can ssh to Linux servers and work in vi quite happily. From "anywhere." :) Sprint 3G was always painful at best.

Ping times to Google on MiFi are about the same as Cox cable modem.

Total transfer cap: MiFi is $50/month for 5GB/month, or $80/month for 10GB/month. Sprint has no transfer cap. I don't know the equivalent pricing at Sprint.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

Cheers,

j
