We have tried a wiki and that is great for taking notes but not so well for step by step instructions and things of that nature. I guess I can look closer at Google Docs. I would like to keep it in house (control issues) if possible but that could be an option.

Depending on the size of the organization....Google Apps (docs) or a
wiki engine like MediaWiki.

With Sharepoint you have the usual LDAPish type of issues, where authentication is sometimes not as seamless as it should be (what do you expect from Micro$oft). Hummingbird works good if you set it up right, and there are only a few folks in town that really know how to do it right. I can give you a name/number if you want it. Popularity/support for it is ever so slowly dying away, and I see it probably gone in 4-5 years.
