use PLOP. you can boot to usb on almost any computer with a cdrom drive.
very handy and takes up hardly any room on the cd so scratches dont usually
obscure the data.

i also recomend persistence on the usb drive..just dont try to update the
kernel on it...apt-get install works fine and it saves your settings,
documents, etc.
