I may not work in the business world, but that sounds like crazy talk.

2-4 TB is not *large* storage anymore.

We've deployed 40 or so Dell R710s (2U 6 SATA bay server) with 2TB
drives (WD drives supplied by DELL) and they've been pretty solid.  We
don't raid these in anyway (since they're data nodes in a hadoop pool
that handles the redundancy for us), but we get 10 TB out of each of
these.  One of these could easily handle 5 TB of drive storage.

Could you not deploy one of these and use the magic rsync?
