Speaking of lightwieght desktop, I think I recently read something about an upcoming or recently released kernel that's supposed to improve the responsivness of desktop apps for linux users, I don't know the particulars, but it seems like there's a lot of exciting refinments in linux and OSS in general latley

LXDE is the Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment.  It's suppose to be gnome
friendly in that
all/most apps can run without downloading the gnome underbelly.  But much
lighter than XFCE.Chad, CISSP

Do a google for lubuntu to find out more as lubuntu joins the WM set this
october
