OK I finally got it.
The video encode quality is terrible by "scene" standards.
It is h.264 in an mpeg4 wrapper
The audio is
mp4a: MPEG-4 AAC LC
My guess is you don't have a decoder for AAC
Some googleing says you need libfaad.

Enable it at compilation.
* your mplayer was not compiled with faad support. recompile it
after installing libfaad package.

The video display quality is exceptional, but I get an error for the audio
that says: "cannot find codec for audio format 0x6134706D"
So no audio using Mplayer or Totem or Caffeine.
