A dell 2950 or better yet R710(4 1GbE nics) works fairly well with OF

That's actually right in line with what I've been looking at.
Their Storform iS703 storage server w/12 1TB drives is $6800.

You say you installed openfiler on yours, though, but the iS703
seems to come with a web management GUI.  Am I mistaken in thinking
that this is essentially an appliance?
