[olug] startx / init 5 hangs, ctrl-alt Fx doesn't work

yes, the qwerky tty1 for X is well qwerky.
i changed the inittab a while ago, so i can boot up and logon as root.
But after logging in, all of the following disable the keyboard and
mouse on the console and X seems to hang.


gdm  (hangs with blue circling dots around unmoveable mouse pointer)
gdm --debug
kdm (starts kde, but can't use mouse or keyboard on console any longer)

ctrl-alt+F2 or F3 or Fx  --->  nothing
ctrl-alt+backspace --> nothing
ctrl-alt+del             --> nothing
caps lock              --> no change in LED
num lock               --> no change in LED
