Adam,

I hope you enjoy your first foray into Linux.

I don't use Ubuntu for a variety of reasons. However, you will
probably need to install some codecs and libdvdcss. This link should
get you taken care of. It has specific instructions for playing DVDs.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

And I don't want to start a flame-war on what is better, but part of
the great appeal of Linux is choice. There are tons of distros, and
several desktop environments. I highly recommend looking at a couple
so you can make a decision on what works best for you.

I personally recommend looking at openSUSE as a distro, and KDE as a
desktop environment. The latest weekly build of KDE can be found here
on a live CD.

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Medias/images/iso/KDE4-UNSTABLE-Live.i686-1.3.61-Build2.1.iso

Don't worry that the link says UNSTABLE. That just means it is a
weekly build. A Live CD allows you to boot to the CD and run your
computer from that CD, so you can give it a test drive without having
to format your computer or install anything. Running off a CD will be
a little slow, but again, it is just to give you an idea You may want
to check out a few live CDs from a couple different distros.
