[olug] A short Mythbuntu Report

I did a successful Mythbuntu install today from a the 7.10 Live CD. It was
very painless, within a couple of hours I was watching basketball and
recording an episode of CSI.

I'm using a Dell Pentium 1.7Ghz for the backend. The Mythbuntu CD installed
without major problems and I had the 5 step MythTV setup in front of me. I
did have some kind of theme/display glitch inside of the setup script. My
mouse was only visible inside of a text box, which made navigation a bit of a
pain, but still workable. I used my notes from Jon L's presentation last
fall to set things up, and had no problems with the major settings.

When setting up the MythTV I told the backend that the server and myth server
were both at 192.168.1.110. I wondered if Myth was actually setting the IP
in /etc/network/interfaces. The answer was no. When I rebooted the box for
the first time, it still sent out for a DHCP address, so I dropped back to
xfce and set it properly.

After my stunning success with the backend, I went back upstairs and used
Adept to pull down the mythtv-frontend package for my main desktop PC. After
a trip back downstairs to get the mysql password, I was rewarded with the
main MythTV screen. I hit "Watch TV" and played with the controls while
Kansas outlasted Davison.

Still to do:
1) Learn to program recordings carefully. I had no idea that "Hannah Montana"
was shown that often.
2) FInd a way to run the frontend in a window instead of full screen, so I can
pretend to get work done. I think I saw some window configuration tools in
the Appearances section of setup, but when I enabled "Run in A Window" the
window Myth ran in was not re-sizeable.
3) Play with the music and DVD settings
4) Buy a DVD Burner
5) Buy a bigger hard drive
6) Find out if someone who has Fox Soccer channel will ship me a few
Premiership matches or Aussie Rules Football matches.

PS. DIT (be nice, I have family that works there) had a Blu-Ray reader on the
counter yesterday. Are any of them working in Linux yet?

Dave
