I use Cygwin/X on my XP laptop and it works fine.  You may have to
dredge up some knowledge on starting window managers, but other than
that it's easy peasy to set up.  If Cygwin would have been this good 12
years ago I may never have gotten into Linux in the first place.  I'm
glad it took a while to mature.
