[olug] strange networking ...

Does connecting with ssh in verbose mode (-v/-vv/-vvv) give any  
insight when trying to but unable connect to a given host?

I don't know if this could be related to your problem, but in the  
past I've had sshd DNS lookups (see UseDNS in sshd_config) timing out  
cause long delays as the lookup times out.
