The company I work for, Solutionary, Inc.[0], is looking to hire a new
person for the Systems department (where I work). We're moving on this
quickly (interviewing this week and next week) and we hope to make a
decision by the end of next week. If you're thinking about changing
jobs, are looking, or just curious, please read on.

To give a quick summary, Solutionary is a Managed Security Services
Provider (MSSP). Among the services we offer to clients is log
monitoring, network IDS management and monitoring, network perimeter
monitoring, vulnerability assessments, various security consulting
services, etc. Pretty much anything involving network security, we're
involved in or interested in.

The Systems department is responsible for maintaining all of it. This
includes the internal corporate network and desktops, all of the
back-office systems, all of the back-end systems that run and provide
the infrastructure to the services we offer, etc.

We deal with a very large variety of technologies for the size of our
company, which means there's a great opportunity to work with a lot of
different and interesting technologies.

We're not a 100% Linux shop, but there is definitely a large emphasis
there. We run Windows on the desktop, and along with that, we have a
selection of Windows servers providing user management in
ActiveDirectory, Exchange for e-mail, and a handful of other things.

Our entire back end and all of our services are linux based, however,
and in an average day, I would say I probably spend at least 75%-80% of
my time dealing with Linux related things. For most new projects and to
solve problems, we nearly always investigate Open Source solutions
before we consider proprietary options.

The ideal candidate for this position would have a very strong general
background in IT, be interested in learning new things and capable of
picking up new things in a hurry. They would be capable of being given
a list of projects to work on, and then be able to work on those
projects in a fairly independent way.

A list of specific skills and experience we're looking for in a perfect
candidate might be. . .

Most desirable:
3+ years of Linux/Unix administration (preferably Linux)
2+ years of Windows server administration
2+ years of network administration (switches, routers, firewalls, etc)
network security experience

Nice to have experience in:
Shell scripting, Perl, and System Automation
Network/System Monitoring (Nagios, Big Brother, etc)
VPNs, IPSec, and OpenVPN
ActiveDirectory
Oracle, PostgreSQL, and/or MS SQL Server administration
Fiber Channel SANs & iSCSI
Exchange
System Logging (Syslog-NG, syslogd, etc)
Enterprise backups, tape drives
LDAP/OpenLDAP
DR planning and implementation
Xen
Cisco CallManager/Unity

We absolutely do not expect anyone to be an expert in all of this, or
even necessarily most of it. Heck, we expect that most people will
probably have little or no experience in as much as half of these
things. If you're a wiz in Linux, have some solid experience in one of
the other areas, and love technology, you're what we're looking for. The
one thing I can add, though, is that this isn't an entry level position.

I know this isn't your standard HR description or posting (what can I
say, I'm just one of the tech guys), and I just threw it together right
now, so if anyone wants to see the "official" job description, let me
know, or send an e-mail to hr at solutionary.com. If you have any
questions at all (about the job, what we're looking for, anything like
that) please let me know.

If you're interested, you can send resumes to me directly, or to
hr at solutionary.com. I urge you to send them to me, however, as I can
bypass/rush the HR stuff and get an interview scheduled ASAP if I think
you're a match. Again, any questions or if you are interested, let me
know.
