Yes, there is a fix (for Audigy cards at least) but it's very extensive from
what I remember and I don't remember what forum I was on that helped me.  I
would try linuxquestions.org first.

My sound works in Suse 9.3 when i invoke Yast sound configuration.  I 
can't get sound to work otherwise.  Can someone tell me why Yast 
configuration for the sound card has to be active to use sound?  I know 
that's not normal ... there must be a fix
