I've been switching from SuSE Linux, to Fedora Core and back a couple of
times, and I've been able to get almost all of my information and
settings to remain in my home partion. Upgrading shouldn't be no
trouble what so ever. About the only thing that may have some trouble
with, is some Desktop settings for your prefered Desktop Enviroment. (I
had some troubles going from Gnome 2.6 Default for SuSE to 2.8 Fedora
Core Default, that and some ownership problems). Thunderbird on the
other hand, should upgrade with no problem. Infact, if you need to
migrate information from a backup, to a restore, the folder you want to
hit, is your .thunderbird folder in your home directory. (EG:
/home/eumario/.thunderbird) Everything, from settings, filters, and
your inbox/mailbox folders are stored in that directory. And it will
read on most versions of Thunderbird (I've gone from the newest version
to 0.8, and back with the same settings and folders, and have not lost
a thing).

Hope this helps you out.
