Strange.

Since you can get into the box with another account, check to ensure that 
"/bin/bash" (or whatever shell you like) is really at the end of the user's 
entry in the /etc/passwd.

Also you may try resetting the password, lost options would be check the 
permissions on his /home/user account, since you probably used root to create 
it, did you change the owner/user permissions?
