Divx is a codec, which is just - basically for lack of a better description - a compression method for the video file.  It's the way that the actual filetype is encoded.  It uses the decoder, the divx codec, to "decompress" the file.  It's kind of like thinking of a live decompression of a gzip archive without actually decompressing it - if that makes any sense. 

Again, my understanding isn't complete on the subject, but that is the basics afaik.  If I'm wrong, someone please point it out ;).
