thanks, this has never worked for me before -- until now when I tried the
keypad. =)  still not great (doesn't resize my desktop, just the display
size -- so I end up scrolling around the desktop) but it's something!

yeah, I'd advise just to edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and restart X
