How about batch mode gpg to just encrypt files....

that uses gpg in batch mode.  e.g.

mysqldump -u payne --password="xyzzy" -A | gpg -ea -r payne --batch > b.sql.asc

Kris - Have you already read the docs that google 'why use pgp' points too?

In my experience it's hard to get people to use pgp.  

Doesn't using pgp/gpg to sign emails make it harder to have Plausible
deniability :-)
