 From the sounds of it you are either missing the default route in the 
laptop.
    'route add default gw IP_OF_DESKTOP'

Or you don't have ip forwarding turned on on the desktop (which lets it 
forward traffic for another machine.)

   echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
