[olug] Novell and Linux

I heard some things a little different:
Novell Linux Services 1.0 is in beta, 2.0 is not due out until mid to late 2004.
Novell Linux Services 2.0 will provide 98% of the functionality of NetWare on Linux when released.
Does not appear that there will be a Novell Client for Linux past what you can find now.

I do agree that they are doing good things in this arena and I am REALLY excited about the CURRENT direction of things BUT I am concerned about what changes they will do and if they will be for the better OR if they will damage Linux and stunt the movement some. I hope that Novell has learned from it's past mistakes when they were the dominate force in the NOS area and will not try to abuse it again when and if they become a dominate force again.

Just my humble opinion......

Just went to a Novell/Linux seminar today and I must say I'm very impressed
with Novell's plans for joining the Linux services arena.

Among the things that I found interesting:

Novell will transition internally from Windows desktops to Linux desktops
Novell Nterprise Services 2.0 (currently in beta) will provide 90+% of the
same services that a Novell server provides, but running on Linux.
Novell 7.0 which will give the admins the option of running either the
Netware or the Linux kernel has a tentative ETA of 2005
Novell plans to port all of it's current server and client-side software to
Linux (except for the need for the client software for the file server)
Novell plans to continue the Red Carpet support and Red Hat support.
Novell plans to continue support for the Ximian desktop, Mono, and the SUSE
distro (although they may change the name).

There was a lot more, so if anyone has any questions, just let me know.

Bill
