I have a cheaper APC UPS, a BackUPS ES 500.  It has the usb connector. 
No serial connector came with it.  

I use apcupsd (http://wwww.apcupsd.org) to monitor it.  I had to goof
with the config file a bit, but the 3.10 version does support a USB
connection very well.
