The problem is that this package has been doing this for about a month,
through 2 updates.

Here's the output from what you told me:

tigger:/home/epenne# dpkg --purge freenet
dpkg: error processing freenet (--purge):
Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should
reinstall it before attempting a removal.
Errors were encountered while processing:
 freenet

So I checked out reinstall options. Here is the outptu from that:

tigger:/home/epenne# dpkg --force-remove-reinstreq -r freenet
dpkg - warning, overriding problem because --force enabled:
Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should
reinstall it before attempting a removal.
(Reading database ... 88177 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing freenet ...
Stopping Freenet nodestart-stop-daemon: user `freenet' not found

invoke-rc.d: initscript freenet, action "stop" failed.
dpkg: error processing freenet (--remove):
subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 2
dpkg: error while cleaning up:
                               subprocess post-installation script
killed by signal (Interrupt)

                       Errors were encountered while processing:
 freenet

I think I need to manually remove it. Is there a file that I can
remove all traces of freenet from and have apt-get magically work?

Eric
