I'm currently using an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro and it works great. Another friend
of mine is using one as well.

XFree86 4.3 works great without the 'official' ATI drivers, including 3D -
albeit Blender currently has an issue with the driver in XFree86, which
should be fixed shortly. Why go through the trouble of putting extra drivers
in, and changing your GL libs?

I would recommend the 9000 using the stock XFree86 4.3 drivers. Also, MPlayer
can utilize the Radeon functions, which is why I went with it in the first
place. I have been very happy with it over the NVidia cards that I have had
in the past.

Use Red Hat 9.0, it has XFree86 4.3 included.

I haven't used the dual-monitor mode yet - I don't have a DVI to DB-15
converter.

Here is an excerpt from /proc/pci for my 9000 pro:

 Bus 1, device 0, function 0:
VGA compatible controller: PCI device 1002:4966 (ATI Technologies Inc)
(rev 1).
      IRQ 10.
      Master Capable. Latency=32. Min Gnt=8.
      Prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xd0000000 [0xd7ffffff].
      I/O at 0xc000 [0xc0ff].
      Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xe5000000 [0xe500ffff].
  Bus 1, device 0, function 1:
Display controller: PCI device 1002:496e (ATI Technologies Inc) (rev 1).
      Master Capable. Latency=32. Min Gnt=8.
      Prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xd8000000 [0xdfffffff].
      Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xe5010000 [0xe501ffff].

You'll need the Bus ID numbers on your system when configuring multi-head
configurations in XF86Config.
