Arghh... yes, this was the problem.  Somehow it had 192.168.1.254 instead of
192.168.1.1 there.  Must have fat fingered the wrong thing when running the
setup.  Thanks so much for pointing me at that one... now if only I could
get X to work properly.  Hrmph.
