That's a (lame) form of copy protection (and one that annoys the crap out of
me, a legitimate owner of the software).  What purpose other then copy
protection would such a key serve, hmm?  Modern MS products are going even
further, with their "activation" concept. That's even more annoying, because
it's not a one time and forget it annoyance.  Add hardware to your system
and all your MS software is likely to need re-activation.
